IN-DEPTH TIMELINE OF MAGGIE HALLAHAN’S PHOTOGRAPHIC INSPIRATIONS AND CREATIONS

 

1969—At age Seven Maggie visited the photography exhibit at the Oakland Museum, “Family of Man.” This was a pivotal photographic moment for her.  She was inspired and moved by the powerful stories each image revealed. From that moment on she did everything she could to photograph.

1975-78—At age 14 Maggie attended a summer workshop led by Ansel Adams in Yosemite. At age 15 and 16 she assisted in dye transfer photographic printmaking, the ultimate in color prints.

1977—Maggie assisted photographer Brett Weston with the printmaking of his Alaska photo series.

1978—At age 16, she graduated from Reseda High School in California as Valedictorian and winner of many national photography awards.

1978 to 1981—She attended Sonoma State University, earning a BA in Expressive Arts.

1981—Maggie spent the semester in Sumatra, Indonesia, photographing the matriarchal culture of the Muslim religion.

1982—She earned school credits while working in Tokyo and Hong Kong for Fuji Press.

1982-1989—Maggie worked as a foreign correspondent in Tokyo and covered events at home in San Francisco for publications such as U.S. News, Business Week and the San Francisco Examiner. Major events she photographed included the resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Takeshita Noboru and the death of Emperor Hirohito.

1984-1985—She worked as a foreign correspondent based in Cairo, covering events in Egypt, Tunisia, Israel and South East Asia for UPI and AP.

1988—Maggie covered the Summer Olympics in South Korea. Her photographs were published in Time magazine, U.S. News, San Francisco Examiner, Burda Publications and dozens of Japanese magazines.

1989—She covered the Loma Prieta earthquake in northern California. Her photographs were published on the front cover of Newsweek and other magazine all over the world.

1991-1999—Maggie worked as a feature photographers for Focus magazine in Munich, Germany.  She covered the demise of the Soviet Union; human in vitro fertilization; solar energy; the turnover of Hong Kong to Chinese control; women motorcycling to Sturgis, South Dakota; Burning Man; X-Games; United States military toxic waste; the Canadian referendum; Florida travel; Hawaii travel; white-water rafting in the Grand Canyon; the Israeli elections and the race for the land speed record. She also photographed for:

2001-2006—Maggie’s solo exhibition “ State of Emergency” toured California museums.  Starting at the Oakland Museum in 2001. The California Endowment for the Arts sponsored the traveling exhibit though 2006. The exhibit, featuring 45 dramatic photographs of California disasters and a portrait series of emergency workers.  Maggie’s training as a fire fighter enabled her to shoot behind-the-scenes images of the 1991 Oakland Hills fire as well as other disasters.

Adobe Lightroom

During the summer of 2006 Maggie was invited to travel in a small group of photographers to Iceland on the Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop Adventure 2006.  In Iceland she photographed and then processed the image file in Adobe Lightroom for the book Photoshop Lightroom Adventure: Mastering Adobe's Next Generation Tool for Digital Photographers by author and photographer Mikkel Aaland, published by O’Reilly

Non-profits and Foundations

For the past two decades, Hallahan has worked for non-profits and foundations including the Acumen Fund, Amnesty International, American Red Cross, Planned Parenthood, the Craigslist Foundation, the Pew Foundation, Malaria No More, Olyset Nets and the United Nations. She uses her expertise to help organizations tell their story and is currently focusing her attention on malaria prevention issues in Africa, South America and Asia.
